Dave La Rocca....aka Hakaman
In 1987, after spending a week with Bob Marley's
percussionist Devon Evans and being truly inspired to start playing drums, Hakaman(Dave LaRocca), in a
short time, had performed on stage with many well known Big Island talents
and musicians.
He played while traveling Europe, arriving in Milan Italy in '92, and for
about a year recorded many sessions with "La Bawana",
one of Italy's hottest reggae bands.
After moving to San Fransisco California in early '94 to join "The
Blue Reptiles" for 11 months, including multiple onstage appearances
with "The Greg Allmand Band", Hakaman toured with "The Sam Andrew Band" of
"Big Brother and the Holding Company" fame, and then closed that
year's performances with "The Chambers Brothers" of Santa Rosa, California.
In '95, he was the Stage Manager for the 3 day long "Health and Harmony
Fair" in Santa Rosa, which had 18,000-20,000 in
attendance each day. During the fair, Hakaman
performed on stage with the likes of "Sister Monika", "Chester
Thomas", "Raul Riko", and "The
Tower of Power" horn section.
In the winter of '96, Hakaman drummed all over Maui with a hot local rock-reggae
band called "The Sun Club", which included opening for "Jimmy
Cliff" and "Third World".
Meanwhile, "Kamau", a Master Djembe player, invited Dave to tour with his dance troup in '97 because of his "rock solid rythm" talent and production experience.
After a powerful tour of spectacular shows and memorable events, Hakaman returned to Maui to prepare and perform for the
island's Y2K "Millennium Show".
Hakaman pushed on his life's driving force and
opened for "Chris Duarte Group" and "Eric Johnson" at the
"Kona Brewery" on the Big Island of
Hawaii on May 19th 2001. The place was smokin' and the whole event was a smashing
success!

Hakaman recently produced a very special
concert......
"A Tribute to Jerry Garcia" on August
4, 2001
in Kona Hawaii. This memorable event brought
in some great performances from Bill Kreutzmann,
the orig. drummer with the Grateful Dead, and his band the "House of
Spirit" coming in from Kauai,......"The Photons", a home
grown band from Anchorage Alaska that play Bluegrass and Folk and Cosmic
funk jams, and to close out the all star Dead performance......"The
Rowan Bros." of San Francisco, Grammy award winning singer/song writers
who recorded with Jerry Garcia since the 70's, and were involved in much GD
song writing. The tribute to Jerry was a memory for a lifetime, and many
were quite proud to have taken part.
